On July 30, 2026, a minimum of nine migrants died as they tried to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. A surge of people flooded the border. Spanish troops were sent in after government officials were unable to control the crowd. Ceuta’s authorities stated that about 40,000 migrants entered on foot, approximately half the city’s 80,000 residents.
The European Union said Frontex would assist and called on Morocco to departures by sea and land. Spanish forces held the flow under control and labored to prevent more fatalities.
